Deselecting all

I often want to read an outline without having a topic selected (which gives one topic arbitrary visual emphasis over the others), but there appears to be no way to achieve this in Opal.

It would be great if clicking in the margin, free of triangles, could deselect all.

You may want to turn off the "Outline current topic" preference.

Thanks, that is a useful hint. But unless I'm missing something else, you are still left with a highlighted topic if you last clicked on a triangle, or a blinking cursor if you last clicked in a topic. I'd like to have just a still window to look at, without having to shift focus away from it. A minor thing, but not unreasonable?

I think that you should always have a place to type (or use keyboard navigation from). I'm not aware of word processors that hide the selection.

But I'm open to suggestion (for 1.0.1 :-), there's sometimes room for preferences.

There are apps that let you "not have a place to type", and that can certainly be useful.  (it's not the only scenario, but when the cat is walking on the keyboard ... )

I vote for clicking in the margin.  Also ESCape (sometimes called Emergency Self-Control) is a good way to go "hands off".  Spend a little time with vi, perhaps as a meditation.

I agree David that I may be asking for something a little unorthodox here. I have the same problem in word processors when I want to just read and suppress the blinking cursor. But writing this reply in Safari, all I have to do is to click outside the text field. I don't see a practical downside to being able to do something similar in Opal (and Mellel and everywhere else for that matter).
