Another Checkbox Related Request

I wish I could turn on Checkboxes at the topic level rather than only for the entire outline so that I could embed checklists within an otherwise 'normal' outline.  That is, on a topic by topic basis, I could turn on checkboxes for that topic and all its subtopics, without affecting the way the other topics appear at all.

How hard could this be?  :-)

I'd like that too.

Already tracking this (case 815). Though "me too" requests help me prioritize.

I actually implemented this in a never-released version of Acta. One reason I didn't release was that there were a bunch of bugs with the implementation...

Hi David,

I just found Opal, nice. Thanks.
I'm still using the ancient IN CONTROL 3.5 (in OS9) because I haven't found anything in OSX or online that works as well for me.  IN CONTROL has checkboxes, but also has columns (such as being able to automatically add a Date-Time stamp to each item, for example) and an integrated calendar too - makes outlining very easy and straightforward.  Are checkboxes and columns a possibility with Opal?

Thanks again,

-Bob

Hi David,

Thanks for the email re: checkboxes and IN CONTROL. Good to know that checkboxes are available. Perhaps because I'm such a die-hard IN CONTROL user, having the checkboxes hidden in Opal's menus - as opposed to being displayed by each item as the default instead -  I find counter intuitive.  Also, seeing the checkboxes staggered to follow the indents of events (as opposed to being left justified like they are IN CONTROL) makes scanning them harder and makes the layout more cluttered looking.

anyhow ...

Thanks again,

-Bob
p.s. Did you get my email re: IN CONTROL?

(cont.)

Also, having a master checkbox at the top of the column which when checked selects all the boxes is pretty standard these days (for example, Yahoo! Mail).  My preference is for  conventional navigation in layouts whenever possible.

I think most outlines aren't to do lists, so they don't need checkboxes.

I don't see a need for a checkbox to select things, when Select All works just as well, and is the convention for applications. Yahoo Mail has to run in a web browser, and doesn't have access to the normal menu bar, so it has to use a workaround.

(I've replied to your e-mail.)

Hi David,

That may be, thanks.  However, I find using checkboxes to select those items completed from those not done, very helpful. Keeping them visually seperate from the items just makes it easier to scan.

Much appreciate your openness to dialog on this David - very encouraging!

Hi David,

I've made a screen shot to show how the checkboxes and columns were laid out in IN CONTROL 3.5:

By all means, turn on the checkboxes! I do use them, but not in a majority of outlines.

I think the new ability to filter (not really documented I'm afraid: check out the popup menu in the toolbar search field) will help you spot incomplete tasks.

As for checkbox position, I just checked a couple other outliners, and both keep the checkbox indented with the topic. (I suspect I could find others that don't if I kept looking.)
