Using Opal

What is the native file format? Any chance of adopting xml or something human readable?

It's a Cocoa archive format. It can be expressed as XML, but this gains you voluminousness without really enhancing readability.

Apparently you can open an outline using Property List Editor and get at the text that way. I don't really recommend this, since it's not intended to be human-readable.
